History of Prayagraj

Prayagraj was known as “Allahabad in ancient times. Prayag means the “Place of sacrifice”. According to mythological stories, this is the same place where Lord Brahma performed the first sacrifice after creating the world. This has been the place of meditation for many great sages and saints.

In 1583 Mughal Emperor Akbar renamed the city “Allahabad” which means “Abode of Allah”. Akbar built a magnificent fort here, which is still under the protection of the Archaelogical Survey of India. However, during the Mughal period despite the presence of the Mughals, its religious importance did not diminish and the kumbh fair held at Sangam was patronised by the Mughals.

After independence in 1947, Allahabad was considered an important administrative and cultural center of Uttar Pradesh. In 2018, the Uttar Pradesh government renamed the city to Prayagraj.
